A young mother has described the devastation for herself and her daughter at the loss of her soul mate, who tragically drowned after taking the “last row” at a surf competition.

Jamie Civil, 35, died on March 26 after a match at Aramoana Beach near Dunedin, New Zealand. Considered one of the best wave riders in the country.

Tragedy struck when she surfed for an extra session after attending the event, while her partner Courtney Morgan and their six-month-old daughter, Lenni, watched.

Courtney posted photos of the family on Instagram to commemorate the moments they shared after her death.

He told FEMAIL that Jamie’s death was “a heavy burden.”

“It was very special to us and especially for our sweet girl, her beauty should be shared,” she said.

Courtney also revealed that the proud dad is looking forward to taking Lenni to a surfboard.

In a post, Courtney shared a photo of the trio on the beach, describing their romance as “perfect”.

“I love you so much and I know you love us too, you let us know that every day,” she wrote.

“It was the happiest times in my life, you and I were the same, we were perfect. The supreme love. I will always love you my dear heart.

“It’s always been good,” she said in another when she was with Jamie.

The waves were “huge” on the day he died, but the surfer was known for tackling dangerous conditions and often came when no one dared.

“These were the conditions in which he lived, where he had the talent, experience and prosperity, and which made the tragedy much more difficult for people to deal with,” said a spokesperson for the local surfing community.

Other surfers paid tribute to the “legendary” barrel rider.

“I’ve met Jamie several times on my trips south, and I’ve always been amazed by his bumpy tubing skills and humble demeanor,” said one surfer.

Another thanked the “legend” for his help over the years and described him as “one of the best”.

“Everything was always fine,” Courtney said when she was with Jamie.

“The last time I saw you this happy, surrounded by your beautiful family, I could see your father embracing your life and loving every minute of it,” another friend said.

The Dunedin community is horrified by the loss, but is also trying to discover Courtney and her daughter.

Jamie was the sole breadwinner in the house, which means Courtney had to return to work sooner than expected.
