A famous hairdresser revealed that the Countess of Wessex uses “smart makeup” to add volume to her hair while looking stylish and practical on her travels abroad.

Currently on a royal tour with her husband, Prince Edward, 57-year-old Sophie has made the perfect look for any occasion.

According to renowned stylist Tom Smith, Evo’s International Creative Director, he had his hair pulled back in one go; A style that looks elegant and trendy but only lasts a few seconds.

Sophie wore the hairstyle as she tackled temperatures as low as 30 degrees on the Gibraltar tour this week.

She also wore the do during her Caribbean tour with Prince Edward in April and when she toured India in 2019.

Tom told FEMAIL that the royal used her blonde hair to fade her graying hair during the tour and hide her roots.

The use of pale cream highlights creates an “instant” “herringbone highlight” effect with the natural distribution of gray hair.

“It has been seen in many celebrities who are eager to adopt their gray hair as part of their hair color designs,” Tom said.

“So Sophie doesn’t need regular roots, which comes in handy when she’s on tour,” the designer added.

She also revealed that the royal used makeup to add more volume to her hairstyle.

“I can see that the position of her side is actually a little to the left of where her hair naturally falls out,” she said.

“When pushed in the direction she naturally uses to pull hair, this gives extra lift and volume around her face,” she said.

The hairdresser added that adding volume to the roots “where there’s no time or inclination to blow dry” is a “smart trick”.

“Combing your hair up and back is a great way to make finer hair look thicker while maintaining its length,” she explains.

The stylist added that thanks to her twisted makeup, Sophie could then rely on a variety of bobby pins to enhance the look.

“Different types of hair accessories have been popular for a while, and a soft closure or hairpin is a good choice to secure the hairstyle,” she said.
