British immigrant Jordana Grace shocked to see their Australian home has en suite bathrooms

A British woman who moved to Australia shares one odd difference she noticed when trying to rent a house: Washing machines are rarely installed in the kitchen.

In a TikTok video titled “Aussie Culture Shock,” comedy writer Jordana Grace re-enacted a conversation she had with a real estate agent while inspecting the kitchen of a Sydney apartment building.

Ms. Grace asked the representative where the washing machine was and why it wasn’t in the kitchen, but was shocked to learn that most Australian homes have laundry facilities with both a washer and dryer.

Most UK homes have washing machines under the kitchen counter due to the limited space in the bathroom and electrical outlets.

“I can’t see the washing machine in the kitchen,” Grace said in the remake video, where the realtor says, “The washing machine is not in the kitchen.”

Miss Grace was then shown the “spacious” laundry room in a separate part of the house.

“Yes, it’s a little small but it does the job and most Australians have it at home. And it’s so hot that you don’t have to use the dryer, so you save money,” said officer Ms. Grace.

He’s also surprised that Australians tend to avoid the dryer and hang their clothes on a clothesline instead.

Other Australians seemed perplexed as to why some British and European homes had put the appliance in the kitchen.

“English houses are not big, many old houses have no room for bathrooms and kitchens already have plumbing,” another British woman said.

Last year, Ms. Grace described Down Under in another video as a kind of “comfortable Hunger Games”, which didn’t fit the stereotype of Australians as being cheerful and relaxed.

“You know the lane that helps you get on the bus? I’ve seen in Australia they’re usually pretty short, that in itself is creepy,” he said.

“But when you speed up and look over your shoulder trying to find an opening to slide in, the Australians will speed up to throw you off the road!

“Okay, so don’t hit the street but they won’t let you in! You have to win it! If you can get in and survive, you can stay.

Ms. Grace went on to describe another aspect of driving in Australia that bothered her, regarding the polite thank-you greeting you usually receive after driving another driver out of the lane.

“You know when someone would come in and gently shake your hand to say ‘thank you’? I rarely understand!’ said.

‘If I let you in, I want the wave! I want to say hello!!!’
