Lenta.ru releases 80 cards for Orthodox Apple Feast

Russian news outlet Lenta.ru published a collection of more than 80 digital greeting cards and holiday messages on August 18 ahead of the Orthodox Feast of the Transfiguration. The release, compiled by editor and neural artist Nelly Sverdlova, provides free downloadable graphics and festive greetings for the annual observance held on August 19.

The Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord is known in folk tradition as the Apple Feast of the Saviour, or Yablochny Spas, as well as Spas on the Hill. In the official Orthodox calendar, the holy day is designated as the Transfiguration of our Lord God and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Unlike many major Christian observances, the Transfiguration falls on a fixed date every year and is not tied to the variable date of Easter. The observance commemorates a central Gospel episode recorded in the biblical books of Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

According to the Gospel narrative, Jesus Christ took three of his apostles, Peter, James, and John, to Mount Tabor approximately 40 days before his crucifixion. While praying on the mountain, Jesus shone with divine light like the sun, and the Old Testament prophets Moses and Elijah appeared beside him.

The event revealed the divine nature of Christ to the three disciples, who were instructed not to tell anyone about the miracle at the time. Historical records indicate the biblical event occurred in winter, around February or March. Early Christian authorities later shifted the celebration to late summer to supplant pagan agrarian harvest rites.

In Russia, the holiday coincides with the start of the apple harvest. Although apples carry no historical connection to the events on Mount Tabor, the fruit became the primary symbol of the day. Believers traditionally bring apples, pears, grapes, and wheat ears to church to receive a formal blessing.

Following the blessing service, worshipers distribute the fruit to people in need and use the produce to make festive meals for family members. Orthodox churches hold a solemn liturgy on August 19, during which clergy wear white vestments to symbolize the divine light surrounding Christ at the Transfiguration.

Churchgoers can participate in confession and receive holy communion after the morning service. The holiday occurs during the Dormition Fast, which is recognized as one of the strictest fasting periods in the Orthodox calendar. Despite the strict dietary rules of the fast, families prepare festive tables featuring sweet apple dishes.
