Leg cramps at night can signal serious health conditions

Doctors from Healthline and the Cleveland Clinic have outlined potential causes of night leg cramps, ranging from minor strain to serious conditions.

Leg cramps at night can signal serious health conditions

Experts from the British medical portal Healthline and the Cleveland Clinic in the United States have warned that night leg cramps can stem from serious underlying health conditions.

Speaking to the news outlet Metro, the medical professionals outlined a range of factors behind nocturnal muscle spasms, which can vary from minor physical strain to indicators of major illness.

According to experts from Healthline, night cramps can be a symptom of motor neuron disease, peripheral neuropathy, Parkinson disease, or osteoarthritis. They noted that spasms may also be linked to organ and systemic conditions, including liver disease, kidney disease, thyroid disorders, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

The health experts specified that when leg cramps are associated with these serious medical issues, they typically occur alongside other noticeable symptoms. Patients may experience severe pain, swelling in the legs, muscle weakness, or skin redness.

Most night cramps remain harmless

Despite the risks associated with underlying disease, doctors from the Cleveland Clinic, a major nonprofit academic medical centre based in Ohio, emphasized that most night cramps are not caused by dangerous conditions.

The Cleveland Clinic physicians noted that almost every person over the age of 50 experiences leg cramps at least once. They added that roughly 40 per cent of women experience leg cramps during pregnancy as a result of weight gain.

The doctors also identified several everyday physical and lifestyle factors that frequently trigger muscle contractions at night. These include leading a sedentary lifestyle, overexerting muscles, sitting in awkward postures, and standing for extended periods. The natural shortening of tendons over time is another common cause.

Early indicators of health issues

Health specialists routinely stress the value of recognizing early physical signs before conditions progress. In a related statement on neurological health, neurologist Igor Matsokin warned that initial symptoms of dementia can emerge many years before a formal diagnosis, citing accelerated memory decline as a key early sign.
