In the spring, the media discussed the release of Korean pop group BTS from mandatory service in the South Korean army. By law, all male citizens between the ages of 18 and 28 are subject to conscription. Members of the popular boy band meet all recruitment criteria, but have decided to consider their cases separately.

South Korea’s Minister of Culture, Arts and Sports has urged the state to exempt BTS soloists from military service. Stopping their activities will be a real loss for our culture, the whole world will feel it. Now they have reached incredible heights in promoting Korean pop culture,” said Minister Hwang Hee.
However, the South Korean armed forces apparently do not agree with such a proposal of the minister of culture. CBS reported that all BTS members can be drafted without exception. And the commissioner of the Korean Military Manpower Administration stated that the call of the star men would be fair in relation to the other citizens of the country and would only benefit the military’s reputation.
