Sensitive skin vs. sensitized skin, we explain the difference

Do you think you have sensitive skin? What if it were only sensitized! Dermatologists help you see more clearly to better respond to your skin problems.

In 2019, a study on the prevalence of sensitive skin revealed that between 60 and 70% of women (and between 50 and 60% of men) believe they have sensitive skin, characterized by itching, burning, stinging, tightness. or dryness. Yet, according to many dermatologists, many of these people have sensitized skin that is more than truly sensitive. But what’s the difference? We explain to you.

How to recognize sensitive skin?

The sensitive skin is a common occurrence (and most often of genetic origin) which would affect 1/3 of the adult population, and more particularly women, who would represent 60% of those affected. All skin types can be affected and it is perfectly possible to combine skin sensitivity and hyperseborrhea.

But how do you recognize sensitive skin? In an article published by the magazine InStyledermatologist Marisa Garshick gives a definition of this skin condition:

This is easily irritated or reactive skin, which can cause redness, peeling, dryness, itching and even the appearance of pimples.

L’reduced barrier function of the skin external factors (UV, friction, temperature variations, unsuitable cosmetics, etc.) as well as internal factors (hormones, state of health, etc.) would be responsible for the decrease in skin tolerance. More rarely, deterioration of nerve endings could also explain epidermal hyperreactivity. Some diseases, such as rosacea and eczema, are also signs of sensitive skin.

To make it comfortable and soothing, it is advisable to adopt an adequate skincare routine to strengthen the skin barrier and balance its microbiota).

How to recognize sensitized skin?

Sensitized skin and sensitive skin share many symptoms, but the first is characterized by an almost immediate reaction (between 24 and 72 hours) of an allergic type. Dr. Sheila Farhang explains to the magazine InStyle :

Sensitized skin refers to skin that is temporarily reactive following contact with an external trigger. This reaction can be accompanied by signs of allergy like swollen eyes, tears and a runny nose.

This immune defense mechanismwhich is characterized by redness, itching and very dry skin, is caused by skin contact with allergens such as nickel or some ingredients contained in household and cosmetic products such as preservatives, perfumes and essential oils.

Actives such as retinol or exfoliating acids (AHA, BHA, PHA etc.) can also give this type of reaction if used in an uninformed way. In this case, it is rarely an allergy, but rather one irritation due to a very aggressive attack on the hydrolipidic film.

Once the triggering factor has been identified and eliminated (if in doubt, do not hesitate to consult a dermatologist or an allergist), the sensitized skin finally regains its usual appearance and returns to being dry, normal, combination or oily – unlike the skin sensitive, which will always be sensitive.

Can sensitive skin be sensitized?

The natural defense mechanisms of sensitive skin, being altered, are more likely to be sensitized by an allergen or by the excessive use of powerful active ingredients. It is therefore possible to have sensitive and sensitized skin !

Indeed, a visit to a dermatologist will rule out (or confirm) a condition and establish a proper routine to calm the symptoms of sensitive skin and / or annihilate those of sensitized skin.
