Stalking in Russia: Lawyers and psychologists say what to do if you are persecuted

The other day, Ekaterina Darma, editor-in-chief of Buro 24/7, said that a follower on the telegram channel had been following her for two years. The journalist did not expect that her publication would provoke such a public reaction. Ekaterina admitted that she was surprised at the number of people with the same traumatic experience – no one is immune from harassment, neither on social networks nor in real life.

After reading Ekaterina’s story, we remembered the stories of other celebrities who found themselves in similar situations, and also talked to psychologists and lawyers who told me what to do if I was persecuted.

In 2019, Bozena Rynska talked about a similar situation.

the journalist wrote on Facebook at the time*.

Actress Yekaterina Volkova spoke about online harassment in 2020: a man made 500 insulting comments every day for a year.

Figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva was also followed for a long time by a stranger, following her on her heels and even participating in training.

– said Eugene on the YouTube show “Hat”.

what psychologists say

Stalking (from English to stalk – to stalk) is a form of violent behavior that includes obsessively paying attention to another person, spying on him, threats and harassment.

— explains psychologist, perinatal psychotherapist, ICF coach Arina Grebeneva.

On the part of the persecutors, this is an obsessive behavior and turns into a painful (depressive) state. It has its own mechanism of emergence and manifestation. According to the expert, its main purpose is to satisfy the “nonsense of love magic.” If such a person already has a history of childhood psychological abuse, then he will most likely seek love and attention through violence as well. In psychology, this is called “positive intention”.

Arina adds.

How do these disorders occur?

biological damage (treatment in the form of pills and visits to a psychiatrist);

for example, changes in psyche caused by problems with intimacy with the mother.

– says psychologist Yevgeny Idzikovsky.

The typical behavior cycles of a stalker were very well described by Ekaterina Darma: either an attack or a feeling of guilt or sympathy. All this revolves in an endless circle.

how to behave

a. Take threats seriously. Life shows that such people commit crimes and experience violence.

2. If you look at the line of behavior, as a rule, the follower actually wants to have control over the behavior of the victim, the manifestation of emotions. Therefore, it is important not to give it to him, block it everywhere and not show it on the street.

3. Record all the actions of the follower to have an evidence base.

four. Do not hesitate to tell the stalker to your friends, relatives and acquaintances, because this is a dangerous situation.

5. Do not show your fear, do not show aggression, because any emotion, including negative ones, strengthens the behavior of a madman.

How to deal with stalking

– explains lawyer Alexei Ogorodnikov.

The same applies to threats to life and health: this is Article 119 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, in which the punishment can range from up to 480 hours of forced labor to imprisonment for up to two years.

Surveillance and dissemination of information constituting personal or family secrets, including through social networks, can be classified as a violation of privacy (Article 137 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Such a crime is punishable by a fine of up to 200 thousand rubles or the amount of salary up to 18 months, or even imprisonment for up to two years.

The expert notes that legally “boring” a stalker in a single case may make it impossible for him to continue his activities. Therefore, you should not refuse such an opportunity, you need to collect evidence: threatening letters, screenshots from social networks and eyewitness accounts. Record the conversations on a tape recorder and film if the stalker tries to approach you. Be sure to record the date, time, and location of each event.

Adds Alex.

In addition, a stalker can be withdrawn under a number of administrative articles: Article 5.61 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation. Article 7.17 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation. Article 20.1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses “Destroying or destroying someone else’s property” and “Little hooliganism” of the Russian Federation.
