The ocean is getting dark – scientists

Scientists found that 21% of the oceans (about 75 million square kilometers) have become much darker in the last twenty years. Depth changes threaten sea ecosystems in the world. This was reported in Global Change Biology magazine.

The phototic zone is a depth in which sunny and moonlight penetrates. In this place, it lives up to 90% of all marine organisms. The light in this region provides photosynthesis and controls the behavioral cycles of animals. Darkness violates these processes and deprives animals of usual habitat.

The causes of darkening change. In the coastal regions, this is a flow that increases with land, including fertilizers, organics and rainfall, especially after heavy rains. In the open ocean – changes in algae dynamics and an increase in surface temperature reduces water transparency.

In the meantime, another study showed another unusual model: the life of the penguins helps to soften the results of global warming in Antarctica. Learn more about it.
