An incredible story happened in Greece. Local resident Vassilis Panagiotaropoulos started evening school at the age of 80 to continue his education, which he gave up almost 70 years ago, The Guardian writes.
Vasilis once stopped studying due to financial problems in the family. He said he left school at the age of 12 to help his father work in the fields. The family lived in a village in the Peloponnese. “But in my heart I always wanted to go back. “This desire has never left me,” said Panagiotaropoulos.
Over the years, the man worked as a waiter and later became a tavern owner, but when he was 80, he told his wife that he wanted to get an education and was going to enroll in an evening school in Athens. He is currently in the same class with 15-year-olds and according to principal Evangelia Pateraki, he is the best student in the class.
The retiree’s favorite subjects are ancient Greek and mathematics. “But there are facts that confuse me a little. For example, I wasn’t sure when the Byzantine Empire started and ended. It’s nice to get an answer,” said Vasilis.
Panagiotaropoulos’ decision created excitement in the Greek community. Demographers predict that the country’s population will decline sharply over the next quarter century, and that by 2050, around 35% of Greece’s population will be over 65 years old.
We previously wrote that the 76-year-old retiree married his 87-year-old girlfriend thanks to the social network. Read more about the romantic story here.
