Paul Vance, author of one of the most successful songs of the pop era of the early 1960s, died on May 30 at the age of 92.
Born Joseph Paul Florio, Vance and co-writer Lee Pokris were songwriters as staff writers at New York’s famed Brill Building Heath Factory. Vance received more than 300 songs, including hits Capture a shooting star, The playground of my mind, Y Tracey.
But that was Brian Highland’s performance Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow polka dot bikini Which dominated AM radio at the time, making Highland a teen idol. The song reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a worldwide hit. The song was apparently inspired by Vance’s daughter, who was very reluctant to wear a bikini in public.
Success was a double-edged sword for a team of songwriters who, to some extent, became the author of innovative songs. His subsequent success was confirmed as the “Laundry Leader”, a parody of the “Packaging Leader” of Shangri-Lass detergents.
Vance left music as the bubble age dwindled and became a successful horse harness owner and breeder.
He is survived by his daughter, Paula. Memorial details were not available.
