700,000-year-old “dwarf” human remains found in Indonesia

Archaeologists have discovered an unusual find on the island of Flores. Among the rare early human remains was a small arm bone. Analysis showed that the finds were about 700 thousand years old. Scientists have named our predecessors “hobbits”.

Experts suggest that “hobbits” are descendants of Homo erectus, which was isolated on this Indonesian island. The first discovery of Homo floresiensis was made there in 2003.

These remains were distinguished by their small size, and therefore the new species was given the unofficial name “hobbits.” The fossils found 21 years ago are about 50 thousand years old, when Homo sapiens lived in Australia south of Flores.

Nature writes that new data suggests that tiny humans lived on the island long before the emergence of Homo sapiens, and that the remains of ancient ancestors were even smaller than those that lived on the island 50,000 years ago.

Under a digital microscope, it was revealed that the arm bone found belonged to an adult human, the smallest of the known species. Scientists suggest that the ancient man was about 100 cm tall. The two teeth are small in size and resemble the teeth of early Homo erectus from Java. This similarity supports the theory of the origin of species that preceded the “hobbits”.
