Kuandyk Bishimbaev was sentenced to 24 years in prison. The former Minister of National Economy of Kazakhstan was accused of murdering his wife Saltanat Nukenova. The high-profile case was watched on the Internet for several months: the trial was broadcast on the Internet for the first time.

In order for Kuandyk Bishimbayev to receive a life sentence, all jurors had to vote unanimously.

Additionally, Bishimbayev’s relative, Bakhytzhan Baizhanov, was sentenced to 4 years in prison for covering up Nukenova’s murder.

On the night of November 8-9 last year, Bishimbayev had an argument with Nukenova in one of the restaurants in Astana, and then severely beat the girl. While examining the case materials, it turned out that the girl’s body remained in the VIP cabin of the restaurant for 6-8 hours, while the defendant continued his usual life and called a fortune teller to “assess” Nukenova’s condition. .
