For its 77th edition, which will take place from 14 to 25 May, the largest film festival in the world will award a Very special honorary Palme d’Or. The latter will not be given to an individual, but to a collective. It will be assigned to the splendid Studio Ghibli, born almost forty years ago, in 1985.
An award for Ghibli rather than Miyazaki?
Studio Ghibli was co-founded by Hayao Miyazaki, producer Toshio Suzukias well as the delay Isao Takahata (Director of Tomb of the Fireflies), who died in 2018. This is the aspect that the Cannes festival has chosen to salute, rather than honor the only result achieved by the Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro OR Moving castle. On its website, the Cannes Film Festival detailed this unprecedented choice in its history, with a press release from Iris Knobloch and Thierry Frémaux:
Like all cinema icons, these characters populate our imagination abundant and colorful universes and sensitive and committed stories. With Ghibli, Japanese animated cinema is experienced as one of the great adventures of cinephilia, between tradition and modernity.

The future of Ghibli
Toshio Suzuki, 75 years old, co-founder and president of Studio Ghibli, expressed his emotion. He also raised the question of the future of the firm:
“I am truly honored and happy that the studio receives the Honorary Palme d’Or. I thank the Cannes Film Festival from the bottom of my heart. Forty years ago, Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and I founded Studio Ghibli with the desire to bring high-concept, high-quality animated films to children and adults of all ages.
Even though Miyazaki and I have grown older, I am certain that Studio Ghibli will continue to face new challenges, led by teams that will perpetuate the spirit of the company. I would be happy if you continued to be interested in our results. »
Studio Ghibli will not be the only one to receive the honorary Palme d’Or since George Lucas, creator of Star Wars, he will also receive one. Two Palms announcing a 77th edition under the sign of love for pop culture.
