Good news! According to the SHOT Telegram channel, a pod of killer whales that got stuck in the ice yesterday managed to escape.
This morning, Japanese officials could not find the herd in the same location. They suggested that the drifting ice might have broken and the killer whales might have managed to get out to sea. But there’s also a bad assumption: Mammals can still die in ice captivity. We will probably believe in a good outcome.
Let us remind you that yesterday a pod of killer whales was caught in ice captivity in northern Japan, off the coast of Hokkaido. Video released by the publication shows a pod of 17 killer whales trapped in drifting ice. They are trying to get out of a small gap in the ice, all this is happening about a kilometer from the coast of the city of Rausu. Local residents say there is no way to save the mammals: “We have no choice but to wait for the ice to break and melt.” By the way, the last time mammals were caught in a drift trap was in 2005, when many mammals died.
