Football: Olympique Lyonnais condemned for “sexual discrimination”

A former player who frequented the club won his case in the Lyon courts in 2017. He criticized the OL for not having provided an agreement for girls entering the training center, while this is the case for boys.

A victory for equality. On Wednesday 29 November, the Lyon court ruled in favor of a former footballer who had sued Olympique Lyonnais for sexual discrimination.

Contractual differences

The complainant was frequenting the club in 2017 and is now 21 years old. As detailed FranceInfoShe “denounced the absence of an agreement for the girls who enter the training centre, while the boys see their path framed by this agreement”.

If the female footballer could benefit from the same support as her male colleagues, “from a sporting, medical or academic point of view”she was not protected by the same guarantees during her formative year.

The club tried to justify the absence of an agreement with the fact that women’s football is not professional. An inadmissible argument, according to the Court, which based its ruling on a law “prohibited[ant] in its first article, under direct discrimination, situations in which, on the basis of sex, a person is treated less favorably than another is, has been or will be in a similar situation.
