NewsNation will host the next Republican primary debate, a major win for the fledgling news network.
The fourth GOP debate will take place at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa on December 6 at 8:00 p.m. The event will be moderated by Megyn Kelly, Elizabeth Vargas of NewsNation and Eliana Johnson of The Washington Free Beacon. The debate will also air on The CW in the Eastern and Central time zones, with an encore in other time zones. NewsNationNow.com and Rumble will also stream the event and SiriusXM’s Triumph Channel will provide live audio.
NewsNation launched in September 2020 as a three-hour primetime newscast on WGN America and has evolved into a full-fledged Nexstar news station. Although its ratings lag far behind major news networks, the network has indicated that its ratings are higher than those of its larger competitors.
NBC News hosted the debate Wednesday night in Miami, with Salem Radio Network and Rumble as partners, as well as the Republican Jewish Coalition. Front-runner Donald Trump skipped the event and indicated he plans to ignore the debates throughout the season.
Fox News moderated the first debate and Fox Business moderated the second. An estimated 12.8 million viewers watched the first debate and 9.5 million the second. These are not the popular numbers of 2016 when Trump was in office. He spoke with then-Fox News host Kelly during the first debate of that cycle, drawing a record 24 million viewers. Kelly now hosts a show for SiriusXM.
Vargas joined NewsNation earlier this year and hosts an evening newscast.
