In Hungary, the director of the National Museum was fired for failure to implement the law on homophobia

A 2021 law bans any mention of homosexuality to minors in public. The director is accused of not having applied it, even though he, a former deputy, had voted for its implementation.

Homophobic laws are in force in Hungary. On Monday 6 November the government fired the director of the National Museum of Hungary, Laszlo Simon.

His fault ? According to the authorities he would have “ lack » to his duty. That is to say, he did not apply the law that prohibits the access of minors to an exhibition that offers content that evokes homosexuality. From 2021, the legislation prohibited any mention of LGBTQI+ people in front of minors in public.

An exhibition on “the best visual journalism”

Until Sunday 5 November, the museum presented in an exhibition the images awarded by the World Press Photo 2023, which awards every year “the best visual journalism” in the world. Among these, several photos about an LGBTQI+ community in the Philippines.

The Hungarian Ministry of Culture then ordered the construction of the museum impede access of minors to the exhibition rooms. But the institute told Agence France Presse not being able to check identity documentsand therefore, rely on “cooperation” visitors.

For this reason, not being able to verify the identity of all visitors, the museum director Laszlo Simon was fired. However, he is a former MP from Viktor Orbán’s party, and he himself had done so voted this homophobic law.
