Repression against women intensifies in Iran, denounces a report by Amnesty International

A recent report by the NGO mentions the growing crackdown on women who refuse to wear the veil in public, particularly due to the moral police still present in the country.

Almost a year after the death of Mahsa Amini, Iranians continue to demonstrate to demand more freedom and fundamental rights for women. But law enforcement authorities are ramping up their oppressive methods to control and punish women and girls, especially those who choose not to wear headscarves in public.

If already last April the sanctions against these women seemed increasingly heavy, Amnesty International confirms it in its new report published on July 26th.

One million text alerts sent to women

This, in particular because of the moral police. While it was due to be disbanded in December 2022, it appears to still be present on the streets of Iran. On July 16, 2023, the police spokesman, Saeed Montazer-Almahdi, officially announced the return of police patrols on foot and by car to enforce the veil requirement across the country. She made it clear that legal action would be taken against the women and girls” who insist on breaking the rules and threatened to do so “bring before the judge “.

An increased surveillance that has never decreased: between 15 April and 14 June 2023, the police sent almostone million text messages containing warning messages to women photographed without veils in their cars, reveals Amnesty International. Therefore, 133,174 texts ordered the temporary detention of the vehicle, 2,000 cars they were confiscated.

Already last April, women who do not wear the hijab were followed by surveillance cameras. The country’s deputy prosecutor had announced that anyone who encourages women to take off the veil could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison. College and high school girls had been poisoned to force schools to close.
