Like crime, sexual harassment in the public space doesn’t take a vacation. Or better, if: leaves with you and plants its parasol a few meters from your towel.
That’s roughly what the results of Yougov’s survey for dating app Bumble show: Nearly half of 18-24-year-olds have experienced harassment while at the beach, and more than a third of women 25-34 reports having experienced similar events.
Never quiet, not even on the beach
No, we NEVER have peace: whether it’s comments about our physique, or unsolicited flirting attempts, or even insults, the beach is – like the rest of the world – the scene of all sorts of sexist behaviors that ruin our lives.
Already we are not necessarily able to respond in normal times in the public space, and this for many reasons (for fear of suffering physical reprisals or because we are simply too stunned to retort something, to name just two), how we react in this contextwhen you’re quietly on your towel, in your bathing suit or topless, and so potentially more vulnerable ?
Do we dare to put off someone who calls us whales, insists on helping us spread our sunscreen, or simply comes between us and our beloved crossword puzzles? Do we have time for this?
The results ? Half of respondents who have experienced or witnessed beach harassment are reluctant to go alone, reports the study of 1,000 people. And yes, concretely, this is also what bullying produces: it makes us restrict our movements and our activitiesnot to take risks, to be more and more careful.
And she, Have you ever experienced harassment while quietly basking in the pill?
