Recovery by Thi Nhu An Pham (Payot)

3 feminist books to read (absolutely) this month

To those who have experienced returning to work after maternity leave like a tsunami. To those who felt guilty for considering it a liberation. To those who have preferred to take a long parental leave. To those who thought they were useless because they were unable to handle everything head-on. Who, as a mother, has missed a promotion and/or has suffered criticism and inappropriate discrimination. To those who have been forced to change their pace of work due to lack of childcare… But also to those who are looked upon with suspicion when one day they dare to postpone a sick child or extend their paternity leave; This book is for you!

With Recovery (Payot), which is a continuation of her eponymous podcast, Thi Nhu An Pham lifts the veil on the taboo of the status of women after maternity leave. An unthinkable that is nevertheless at the crossroads of multiple issues: relationship with the body, with motherhood, with parenthood, placement in a world of work where virility models are still too present, mental load, distribution of parental or domestic tasks, women’s inequalities – men…

Based on her own story and the many testimonies gathered since the launch of her podcast in 2021, but also on her research and interviews with experts, the author analyzes this period of upheaval and fragility still little taken into consideration. Even denied. And she highlights the injustices and obstacles, sometimes systemic, that mothers have to face. An electric shock book, which helps ease feelings of guilt, offers concrete solutions and instills in its readers an outrage that we hope will spread to business leaders, human resources departments and political circles…!

The Cécillon affair: Chantal, the story of a femicide by Ludovico Ninet

On the night of August 7, 2004, in Isère, Marc Cécillon kills his wife Chantal. A few minutes earlier, drunk, he had been ordered to leave a party they were attending with friends after beating up the hostess. The man returns home to get a weapon, returns to the party and shoots several bullets at his wife. In the days that followed, this crime made headlines.

The assassin, local glory of rugby, former player of the national team, captain of the XV of France several times, is depicted there as a fallen colossus, victim of his demons. Initially sentenced to twenty years’ imprisonment, his sentence will be reduced to 14 years after an appeal trial. He will end up being released from jail for good behavior in 2011 … Almost 20 years after this femicide, qualified at the time as a crime of passion, Ludovic Ninet sheds new light on The Cecillion Affair (Les Presses de la Cité) thanks to an investigation as moving as it is trying.

With this story with personal accents, the writer and former journalist of The group, pays homage to Chantal Cécillon, who until then had been so little talked about. Combining her research and her interpretations with the testimonies of the victim’s relatives – her youngest daughter, her mother and a childhood friend – she pulls this sunny woman out of the shadows, trampling on this terrible, and unfortunately frequent, phenomenon of invisibility that affects the victims.

Beyond this modestly sketched portrait, Ludovic Ninet dissects ” the sexism and misogyny that plague this story », questions patriarchal models, collective responsibilities and denounces the silence of a system that closes ranks around its stars but also the impunity of the latter. The author doesn’t spare himself, raising the “ignorance” and “passivity” of the young sports journalist he was at the time. Heartfelt and infinitely gentle, this book reads in one sitting and still resonates in our minds several days after reading it.

The type of capital by Céline Bessière, Sybille Gollac and Jeanne Puchol

You loved marriage and money by Titiou Lecoq? OR The price to pay. How much do straight couples cost women by Lucille Quillet? then you will love it The capital type (Discovery – Delcourt), comic adaptation of the essay of the same name published in 2020.

This album, signed by Céline Bessière and Sybille Gollac, makes the incredible work carried out by the two sociologists over more than 20 years accessible to as many people as possible. Under the pencil stroke of Jeanne Puchol, we dive – with a chorus of wild cats – behind the scenes of law firms, notaries, courts but also family affairs, which shed light on the role of the latter in the perpetuation of inequalities of gender in wealth. Inequalities that crystallize in two key moments – divorces and successions – and which, despite appearances and great rhetoric, continue to widen.

According to a study published in 2020 by Marion Leturcq and Nicolas Frémeaux, the gap between the wealth of women and men almost doubled between 1998 and 2015, from 9% to 16%… We are still stunned after reading this relentless and accessible book, detailing the mechanics that, taken from start to finish, make women the eternal losers of the family equation. To be offered to all those around us from adolescence, to allow each of us to become aware of these inequalities and the sources that underlie them. Hope, in the long run, to reverse the order of things.
