Footballer Benjamin Mendy back in court for rape and attempted rape

Last January he was acquitted of most of the charges against him by the British judiciary. But no verdict had been reached on two other charges against footballer Benjamin Mendy: one for rape of a 24-year-old woman in October 2020 and one for attempted rape of a 29-year-old woman in 2018.

For these last facts, the former Manchester City player has been on trial again since Monday 26 June before the Crown Court in Chester, in the United Kingdom. The process is expected to take two to three weeks.

Benjamin Mendy described as a “predator” according to the indictment

After 5 months of hearing and 13 days of deliberation, on January 13 a jury made up of eight men and four women declared him not guilty to six counts of rape and sexual assault.

During this first hearing, which began in August 2022, the 28-year-old footballer was presented as ” predator by the prosecution, having abused of the victims” vulnerable, terrified and isolated “. The latter had denied having been a danger to women “, assuring that they had only had consensual sex.

Another man, Luigi Saha Matturie, was also implicated in the case, suspected of having served as a scalper and having participated in some rapes. He was found not guilty on three of them and the jury failed to return a verdict on three others, as well as three sexual assaults.

Following the announcement of the verdict, Benjamin Mendy’s attorney, Jenny Wiltshirehe pointed out that he had I can’t wait to clear his name ” candies ” start rebuilding your life“. She was risking the life sentence.

For this second trial, the verdict should fall by the end of the summer.
