Pregnant Rihanna becomes the first face of Pharrell Williams’ Louis Vuitton men

As Pharrell Williams prepares to present his first Louis Vuitton collection at Paris Men’s Fashion Week on June 20, he just revealed his first campaign as a teaser, featuring pregnant Rihanna as his muse.

We rather expect to see Rihanna and Pharrell Williams collaborate in music, but the two artists show us that they are also a couple from a fashion point of view. On June 20, 2023, as part of the Fashion Week men, the first Louis Vuitton men’s show by Pharrell Williams, the newly appointed artistic director of the men’s collections of the French trunk maker, will take place after the death of Virgil Abloh. And before discovering the fruit of his work on the podium, the artist has just revealed his first campaign, with none other than Rihanna as a doubly unexpected muse.

Rihanna, unexpected pregnant muse for the Louis Vuitton by Pharrell Williams man

It turns out to be rather rare to choose a woman to represent the men’s collections. But then a pregnant woman, belly out, is even more so. And that’s perhaps what we like most about these images: the desire to break the codes, less in an ostentatious way than in an uninhibited way.

Because in the end that’s what emerges from this first image of Pharrell Williams’ Louis Vuitton men’s campaign: Rihanna looking straight ahead, not at the lens, with an air of concentration, but relaxed. She wears a leather shirt with a pixel pattern all in shades of gray, which she keeps only one button at chest height, to let her belly breathe. And this time, her linea nigra (pregnancy line) hasn’t been retouched. Instead, she proudly appears in the foreground. The Barbadian singer also carries several LV-branded bags on each arm, as well as a to-go coffee. A powerful woman in her pregnancy, on the move, unstoppable and autonomous, to represent a men’s collection, this is called subverting genres for the better.

Gossipers might say that this image reinforces the injunction that pregnant women remain ultra-performing and desirable throughout their pregnancy. But remember that this is only a first view, and that others will surely follow. Hopefully they will also present Rihanna or other personalities in a repose and/or thoughtful position (bets to see A$AP Rocky are off). Which would also be a relatively unexpected image to promote men’s fashion. And therefore a way to indirectly question masculinity (to get people talking and selling, of course).
