We last met with Denis Simachev in April 2017. Just on the eve of Denis Simachev Shop&Bar’s first tour anniversary. Located in the “Stoleshka”, he immersed the residents of Moscow every weekend in an atmosphere of unlimited festivity. Then the designer, who managed to make Khokhloma glamorous and Russian kitsch paradoxically fashionable, talked about the creation of a cult space, its regulars and surprising situations that can only happen there.
However, it has been more than six years since the interview was published. During this time, Denis Simachev Shop&Bar managed to close. Later, Denis Simachev, together with his partners, opened “SIMACH in Nedalne”, and the designer himself – to shoot two short films and release several collections of clothes that very accurately reflect the character of his master. What’s the value of a single t-shirt with the talking Hyuaks print on it?
The main Russian visionary and provocateur (his account on the banned social network is responsible for this unspoken title) does not plan to stop here. Denis Simachev created products specifically for the National Internet Content Award, established by the Internet Development Institute. The collection will appear very soon. “It’s hard for me to call this line a commercial product because it turned out great things that you really want to wear. Everyone who saw them and was involved in their creation has already added something to their wish list,” says the designer. The collection includes a dark purple sweatshirt with neon Khokhloma lining, a gift box and a shopping basket.

And while we wait for the launch of the collection, we decided to organize a short survey for Denis Simachev. We talked to the designer about fashion, industry issues, past and future. They also managed to make sure that brevity is the sister of talent.

How did you become a designer?
Accidentally. I was supposed to be an artist, but things didn’t go as planned. Since then, I regret it every day. (to laugh.)
If you were asked to list five reasons why you should not be a designer, what would you say?
One reason is enough. Trust my experience and don’t be a designer because sooner or later you will have to create clothes and very few people are good at it.
Yet you have been in the fashion industry for over 20 years. How have people and their needs changed during this time?
Basically, nothing has changed. There is still a small layer of people who understand what style is. There are still a lot of ordinary people who don’t care what to wear, just to be on trend. And there is a large part of the population that usually does not care about everything.
Describe yourself as a designer in three words.
Best of the world.
Many call the fashion industry the most toxic, do you agree?
It seems to me that this is the most subtle environment because everyone is running around each other on their hind legs. I did not notice any toxicity anywhere. Maybe it didn’t affect me.

If you were offered to go back in time and change something, would you accept?
NO. The past was great and I don’t plan to change anything right now. I just want to keep enjoying life.
Do you think domestic designers have a chance to reach a new level in the era of alienation from the West?
Yes, if all designers fly into space, this will be a new stage in our domestic creativity. But so far, only filmmakers have been trained there.

When will the designers’ turn come?
Most likely, designers will not be hired, but they will love it there. No one – do whatever you want. There is no one to evaluate. (to laugh.)
What do you think about the fact that a large audience associates your name with the nightlife of the capital rather than fashion?
I can’t say that everyone associates my name with parties. It all depends on age and social environment. Yes, people aged 18-35 primarily represent clubs and nightlife. But those who are older and have money associate my name with design.
If you’re not a designer, then…
director and artist.
The main problem of the fashion industry in Russia is…
cowardice. Many designers are afraid of being sober in their evaluations and cannot face themselves.

How do you evaluate yourself?
When I evaluate myself, I try not to drink. (to laugh.)
What advice would you give to newcomers to the industry?
urination
What is fashion for you?
Empty word.
What are your plans for the future?
Enjoy.
