How Le Pliage de Longchamp reasserts itself for the 2020s

It-bag from the Y2K playgrounds, this fold-over bag is back in fashion today. And this, in an eco-sustainable version in recycled nylon. Will this be enough for Le Pliage Green of Longchamp to seduce the TikTok generation?

It will undoubtedly have been the most popular bag in your college or in the neighboring city. Both it-bag for playgrounds and multipurpose bag for mothers and grandmothers, Le Pliage de Longchamp has never completely fallen out of favor. But it’s still set to sign off on a big comeback in hype for the 2020s, driven by recycled materials and today’s influencing talent.

Le Pliage de Longchamp, with different connotations in France and abroad

“It was a bit like the bad whore bag of the time: in all colors, in all sizes, it was the Stan Smith of bags! »we particularly mention on the French-speaking part of TikTok at the moment.

Abroad, its very French identity and relatively affordable price still make it a Parisian-sounding little dream piece.. It’s even featured on the English-speaking TikTok side alongside much more expensive luxury handbags, from Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, or even Chanel.

Le Pliage Green by Longchamp in recycled nylon canvas to appeal to a more committed youth

Since its launch in 1993, it has tried to make a comeback on the French fashion scene in a so-called Green version, because it is made with recycled nylon, fishing nets, ropes, rugs, carpets or tights. This is enough to adhere to today’s eco-responsibility wishes.

This iconic model of French leather goods is therefore still adorned with its characteristic leather details but it can exchange its virgin polyester canvas for recycled from summer 2021. This does not change the robustness, lightness and flexibility of the bag. It can still be folded up for easy storage anywhere (and why not play with the Russian doll with the different existing sizes).

So many arguments that this new Le Pliage Green could very well come back into fashion. In any case, this is what the French house founded in 1948, now led by Jean Cassegrain (CEO and nephew of the founder of Longchamp) and his sister in artistic direction, Sophie Delafontaine, hopes for.

Seeing how all the remnants of the 90s and especially 2000s are making a comeback today, it’s only a matter of time before fans of Y2K trends get their hands on them.

LONGCHAMP X Marie Papillon | The folding green

And to be sure, the brand is bending over backwards to seduce even the new international youth so eager for environmental commitment and style. In France, he bets on videos with Marie Papillon playing at folding the famous accessory, or recycling the plastic waste she encounters to make bags.

As recycled materials are relatively more expensive to produce and demand would be very high, Le Pliage Green costs a little more (€105) than the original (€95). A small price difference for this timeless that has become even more resistant.

On February 28, 2022, the house also released an incredible limited edition collaboration with @Couturfu, the Instagram account of hilarious fashion memes. It’s a Le Pliage XL in recycled polyester canvas, barred across the front with a huge “GO” written in the font typical of industry troublemakers. Modular, the bag can expand by opening the zipper. Thus increasing its capacity reveals an extra word, “RETURN”, as if to joke about the annoying tendency that one may have to return more and more full of holidays than at the departure. Rather than breaking your suitcase, this THE Longchamp x Couturfu leaflet will help you become Mary Poppins!
