According to one study, taking an antibiotic after risky sex would reduce its incidence.

What if antibiotics were a preventative treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)? These are the conclusions of a study published on 6 April a The New England journal of medicineidentified by franceinfo.

A promising survey conducted on more than 500 participants

Conducted on 501 participants, the survey focuses mainly on gay men and transgender women, who use PrEP treatment, a drug treatment that prevents HIV infection.

The study underlines that for male homosexuals, the risk of developing the most frequent bacterial sexually transmitted diseases (syphilis, chlamydia and gonococcus) is reduced by three quarters, after taking the antibiotic doxycycline, within 3 days of risky intercourse.

However, these results must be taken with caution, the intake of antibiotics must be monitored and regulated, reports the doctor and journalist Martin Ducret with our colleagues from franceinfo.
