From April 1, sexist contempt becomes a crime

“Aggravated” sexist contempt will now be punished with a fine of 3,750 euros.

Since its implementation in 2018, sexist contempt has been classified as a misdemeanor. “Aggravated” sexist outrage will be characterized as a crime from 1 Aprilas noted SHE.

His definition does not change. Sexist indignation remains “a manifestation of sexism, which is expressed through behaviors with a sexual or sexist connotation, which damage the dignity of the person due to their degrading or humiliating nature, and create an “intimidating, hostile or offensive effect”.

But the level of legal severity increases. A person convicted of sexist contempt risks fine of up to 3,750 euros. This article, voted in November 2022 as part of the revision of the Ministry of the Interior’s guideline and planning law, reinforces the so-called “Skiappa” law of 3 August 2018.

Already 3,700 crimes

Sexist outrage can also be characterized by sexual remarks or gestures such as catcalls and demeaning comments about physical appearance in public spaces. Contempt is considered “aggravated” if it is committed by a person who abuses her authority, on a vulnerable person or if it happens on public transport.

According to the government, 3,700 sexist contempt offenses were registered in France between 2020 and 2021. The victims are mostly women, “except when it comes to outrage over the victim’s sexual orientation,” and the perpetrators are “almost exclusively” men.
