Janine Shalom is dead: The veteran theater publicist turned 63

Veteran theater publicist Janine Shalom has died. She was 63.

Shalom, who died on March 25, was Premier’s director of theater PR for 17 years, where she directed several high-profile productions such as Hamilton, Harry Potter and the Cursed ChildAnd Les Misérables. She also spent time at the Almeida Theater in North London and the National Theatre.

Personalities from across the theater world paid tribute to Shalom after the news of her death was announced late Sunday evening in a statement on the Premier’s official website.

“As one of the industry’s leading publicists, she has represented everything from the smallest theater companies to the largest productions in the West End; and each time she did it with her unique strength, persistence and passion,” the prime minister’s statement read. “She was a titan and for those who knew her or were privileged to work with her, we share your sense of profound loss.”

In a series of tweets, producer Sonia Friedman, who has worked with Shalom on several productions, including the Cursed childThe veteran publicist is a “loyal, dedicated, very dedicated colleague and also a good friend”.

“Janine was the press representative for the very first show I ever produced at the National,” Friedman wrote. “That show also happened to be the first show she was ever the press for, so we had a lifelong bond. She has worked with us on numerous shows and has always been a rock. A great sadness for all who knew her and worked with her. “

Friedman added, “Janine – I will miss your sunny, mischievous, wise smile. REST IN PEACE.”

Deadline Editor at Large Baz Bamigboye tweeted that Shalom was “in the theater every waking hour”.

“The thing about Janine Shalom,” he continued, “was that she didn’t take care of herself. The show and the people in it were the most important. She wanted no fame, no name checking. “Oh, for God’s sake,” she exclaimed after hearing a sordid backstage story. It was a pleasure to hear her laugh. RIP Janine. We will miss you.”
