Experts say that this technique is not very safe. First, it can cause irritation and an allergic reaction on the lips. Second, there is no scientific evidence that the technique will help reduce bad breath. Third, it can cause breathing problems. When oxygen levels in the body get too low, cardiac arrhythmias and even seizures can occur. And if the nose is already stuffy, plugging the mouth could theoretically increase this risk.
