A 36-year-old man from India, who was declared dead and then cremated, has emerged alive and well eight months later in a case of mistaken identity.
Police from Margao city in Goa found Deepak Balakrishnan Kandi at a hotel on Old Station Road on Tuesday evening.
He was then taken into the custody of the Kerala police, who checked out after realizing the cremated body did not belong to him, reports The Times of India.
According to police sources, Deepak disappeared on June 7 last year from Meppayur town in Kerala district and about 540 km south of Margao.

A missing person has been reported to the local police station.
However, on July 17, the body of a man recovered from a beach in Kerala was wrongly identified as Deepak.
Deepak’s family performed the last rites, but days later the Kerala police determined that the cremated body actually belonged to Irshad, a resident of Panthirkkara in Kerala who was also missing.

According to police sources, Deepak Balakrishnan Kandi (pictured) went missing on June 7 last year from Meppayur city in Kerala district and about 540 km south of Margao.
A DNA test conducted on samples from Deepak’s remains confirmed a case of mistaken identity by the police.
A search was then launched and the investigation was taken over by the criminal police.
Margao City Police conducted routine surveillance of hotels on Tuesday.
During a random check of the guest list of a hotel along the old station road, they came across an Aadhar number – a unique identity number voluntarily obtained by citizens of India and resident foreigners – which revealed Deepak’s identity.
He was arrested and the Kerala police then came and arrested him.
Deepak told the police that he had traveled to various places including Jaipur, Delhi and Punjab before arriving in Goa recently.
He also said that he sometimes worked in Bogmalo, a village in Goa.
Deepak moved to the hotel in Margao, where he eventually fell on the police radar, ending his eight-month disappearance.
When reporters told him at Margao police station on Wednesday that his final rights had been exercised, Deepak smiled and said it was the first time he had heard of it before the Kerala police took him away.

In May 2021, an elderly woman in India narrowly avoided being burned alive in another case of mistaken identity.
Woman identified as Shakuntala Gaikwad tested positive for Covid.
Her family took her to the Silver Jubilee Hospital in Baramati, but the wards were full and she was turned away, Yahoo reported.
While waiting for an ambulance, she passed out and the family thought she was dead and prepared her for cremation.
But just before the fire was lit, Shakuntala woke up in a panic on her own stretcher and started crying.
The local police confirmed the story.
She was later taken back to the hospital for treatment.
