Graham Nash, Melissa Etheridge Remember David Crosby: “He Leaves a Big Void” – Update

RENEW FOR UPDATES…Graham Nash, whose voice was a perfect match for David Crosby and Stephen Stills in one of the best folk-rock trios of their day, today remembered his late bandmate Crosby, as did singer Melissa Etheridge, with whom Crosby had two fathered children.

“I am grieving the loss of my friend and Bailey’s biological father, David,” Etheridge wrote on her Facebook page. “He gave me a family. I will be forever grateful to him, Django and Jan. His music and legacy will inspire many future generations. A true treasure.”

Crosby was the sperm donor for Etheridge and her then-partner Julie Cypher in their efforts to start a family. In addition to daughter Bailey, they had a son, Beckett, who died in 2020 at the age of 21 after a long battle with addiction.

“It is with deep and profound sadness that I have learned that my friend David Crosby has passed away,” Nash said on Facebook. I know people tend to focus on how fleeting our relationship was at times, but what has always been more important to me and David than anything else was the pure joy of the music we made together, the sound we discovered together and the deep friendship we shared all those many long years. David was fearless in life and in music. He leaves a great void of pure personality and talent in this world. He expressed his mind, heart and passion through his beautiful music and leaves an incredible legacy. These are the things that matter most. My heart truly goes out to his wife Jan, his son Django and all the people he touched in this world.”

Nash, Crosby and Stephen Stills first met in 1966 when Nash, then in the band The Hollies, toured the United States. The three met at a now almost mythical party at Laurel Canyon, home of Cass Elliott. Nash soon left the Hollies to join Crosby and Stills in 1968. (A year later, Neil Young began working occasionally with the trio as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

In recent years, longstanding friction between Crosby and his bandmates reached a boiling point when Crosby became estranged from the other three.
