Who would have thought that few colors could scare narrow-minded people so much? The Algerian Ministry of Commerce launched, Tuesday 3 January, an information campaign aimed at dissuading consumers from buying products with the colors of the rainbow. T-shirts, sneakers, school supplies… Anything that could display the LGBT flag must disappear, because according to the site Algeria 360these colors are “ not in conformity with the precepts of Islam”.
A tool at the service of a homophobic policy
This campaign, which is part “ in the context of the fight against any form of violation of the Sharia principles », is one more tool at the service of the homophobic politics that is rampant in Algeria, where homosexuality is a crime punishable by 3 years in prison. The Algerian government will therefore try until 9 January “to raise awareness” the population, especially young people, especially via SMS.
In this hunt for the rainbow, the designated culprit is none other than the West, accused of spreading alleged LGBT propaganda. The International Courier remember the words posted by the Arab newspaper Echoroukon December 20, 2022. “ Western societies, after breaking up the family, rebelling against marriage, fighting against masculinity and promoting forbidden relationships, have become passionate about abnormal and perverse relationships. », wrote the author in an article entitled “The decline of Western civilization. From homosexuality to pedophilia”. The story doesn’t say what they intend to do with the rainbows in the sky.
