Rescuers in Crimea have located four Russian tourists who went missing inside Krasnaya Cave after heavy rains caused severe flooding that trapped them underground, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia.
The group, consisting of three men and one woman, was found in satisfactory condition, state news agency RIA Novosti reported. Emergency personnel are currently taking measures to safely extract the four individuals from the cave system.
The tourists became stranded inside Krasnaya Cave when intense rainfall caused rapid inundation throughout the subterranean passages. Water levels rose quickly, completely blocking the main exit route and leaving the group unable to leave on their own.
A major search and rescue operation was launched after the incident was reported. A total of 41 personnel and 12 units of specialized equipment were deployed to the scene, where an interdepartmental operational headquarters was established to coordinate the rescue effort.
Subterranean limestone network
Krasnaya Cave, also translated as Red Cave or known locally as Kizil-Koba, is the largest cave system in the Crimean Mountains. Carved out of limestone karst by an underground river, the complex extends over 26 kilometers through multiple subterranean levels, featuring subterranean lakes, flooded galleries, and narrow waterlogged passages.
During periods of heavy rainfall, water runoff quickly channels into the limestone sinkholes and subterranean streams of Krasnaya Cave. Sudden surges in water levels can flood low-lying passages and create impassable siphons, posing significant hazards to visitors exploring the inner chambers of the cave network.
Emergency response operations
The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, known as EMERCOM, is the main government agency tasked with civil defense, natural disaster relief, and search and rescue missions. The agency operates regional directorates equipped with specialized units trained for complex cave, mountain, and aquatic rescue operations.
Emergency crews remain on site as rescue teams work to bring all four tourists out from underground to complete the operation.
