Kelly Brook has spoken about the love triangle she found herself in between Hollywood actors Jason Statham and Billy Zane, revealing she was still with Statham when she met Zane. The presenter, 46, said she had been dating Statham for seven years before Zane came into her life.
The conversation came about on Loose Women on Monday after Titanic, which starred Zane, was voted the best love triangle in cinema history. Kelly was asked by the panel: "Can you love two people at the same time?" and went on to explain how her relationship with Zane came about.
Admitting she had been in love triangles in the past, Kelly said: "There were a few overlaps because you don't have the emotional maturity to acknowledge something has come to an end or you've outgrown something. Maybe it takes someone else to come along to make you realise that. I do feel like I've been in a situation a few times where that has happened."
She continued: "When I met Cal from Titanic, I was with somebody else when we first met. My first boyfriend, I'd been with him since I was 18 when I met him. When I met Billy Zane, I was 25. I was a young woman. My first boyfriend didn't really see me as a woman, he still saw me as a girl. I think someone coming along and seeing me for the woman that I had become rather than the girl I was made me step into that new person a lot more."
"It was inevitable," she added. Kelly then joked that while she was dating Zane, her friends would call her "Rose", after Kate Winslet's character in Titanic, who is caught in a love triangle between her poor artist rescuer Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, and her wealthy, controlling fiance Caledon, played by Zane.
Kelly Brook and Jason Statham's relationship
Kelly dated Statham between 1997 and 2004, and he proposed to her during that time. She had a good job at MTV when the couple moved to Los Angeles, where Statham soon began finding success on screen, eventually becoming one of Hollywood's biggest action stars, with Kelly acting as his "support network".
However, she admitted that while his career skyrocketed, her own "floundered", and she felt "neglected" when he failed to give her the same support she had given him.
Speaking on Elizabeth Day's How To Fail podcast, Kelly said: "His career just took off and it just became the most incredible thing because I did so much and didn't look after myself, I just felt so neglected in that dynamic and to the point where I actually fell out of love with him in the end because he hadn't showed up for me like I'd showed up for him, I didn't feel."
She explained she made the call to end the relationship because she felt Statham "didn't know who I was anymore", and while it was difficult, it was "the best decision". Kelly recalled: "So we broke up and I think he just turned around to me and was like, 'Why are you leaving now? Look I'm a movie star and I'm a millionaire, why now?'"
How Billy Zane entered the picture
Kelly revealed that Statham's reluctance to commit to marriage or children was partly the reason she was drawn into a romance with Zane, whom she met on the set of Survival Island, also known as Three, in 2004.
Kelly and Zane became engaged and lived together in a £1 million farmhouse in Kent before splitting in 2008, after Kelly reportedly decided he was not the man she wanted to marry. They rekindled their romance for the last time at the start of 2008, but the wedding was called off again, with Kelly saying she felt too young to marry at 28.
The £35,000 engagement ring was not enough to keep the couple together, and they split for good in September 2008. Kelly previously told Weekend Magazine: "Jason was my first love. Billy was never going to be somebody I wanted to spend my life with. It was a fling. I knew the relationship with Billy would either make us or break us, and it broke us. Jason says even to this day, 'It was my ego. I couldn't get my head around it.'"
