Musicians Keith Urban and Celine Dion performed at a tribute concert for Australian singer John Farnham at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on Sunday evening.
Farnham was unable to attend The Songs of John Farnham: A Living Legend concert after his family announced that his health has deteriorated, leaving him confined to a wheelchair and requiring continuous oxygen support following his battle with mouth cancer.
The special tribute event brought together a lineup of major Australian and international musical stars to celebrate Farnham's career while raising funds for cancer support initiatives across Australia.
Farnham remains one of Australia's most successful solo performers, best known for his chart-topping 1986 album Whispering Jack and its flagship anthem You're the Voice. The iconic vocalist remained at home, surrounded by family including his wife Jill Farnham and their sons Rob and James Farnham, as the concert took place.
Tribute Performances at Rod Laver Arena
Country music star Keith Urban flew in to Melbourne from his home in Nashville, Tennessee, to take part in the event. Urban delivered a moving rendition of Farnham's 1990s hit song, Burn for You, to the packed arena crowd.
Canadian pop star Celine Dion appeared via video link from Paris, France, offering a rousing version of You're the Voice that had the entire arena audience on their feet.
Dion addressed Farnham directly during her broadcasted segment, praising his vocal talent and his influence on her own career. "John, you've always been such a deep inspiration to me; I always loved to hear you sing," she said.
"The way you sang one song in particular is one of my very, very favourite performances ever," Dion added.
Coldplay frontman Chris Martin also contributed to the night's musical lineup, performing an original comedic tribute song titled A Better Singer Than Me.
Martin poked fun at his own musical credentials during the comedic number. "I really do love Coldplay. I love Coldplay it's true. But my favourite is John Farnham. He's a better singer than you," Martin sang to the audience.
Martin continued his song with further praise for the Australian singer: "Thank you John, thank you John, one day we'll all be gone. But the thing about John Farnham songs is, they'll keep living on. I've tried to understand it, it's difficult you see. You're God's choice, you're the voice - not me."
Collaborations and Stage Appearances
Australian rock veteran Jimmy Barnes took the stage to perform his 1991 duet with Farnham, When Something Is Wrong with My Baby. With Farnham unable to attend, Barnes was joined by his daughter, singer Mahalia Barnes, who stood in to sing Farnham's original vocal verses.
Hollywood actor and musical theatre performer Hugh Jackman appeared via video link, delivering a rendition of the song Talk of The Town.
Jackman expressed his lifelong admiration for the Australian singer during his recorded message. "I've been a fan of yours as long as I can remember," Jackman said. "I have seen you at least 30 times live, and I would say you are one of the greatest I have ever seen onstage."
"The person I am onstage, the entertainer I am, is largely because of you," Jackman added.
Pop group Human Nature also joined the lineup at Rod Laver Arena, with the boy band taking the stage to cover some of Farnham's most beloved hits.
The tribute featured further performances from prominent Australian vocalists, including singer-songwriter Kate Ceberano and Jessica Mauboy, a former Australian Idol finalist who currently serves as a judge on television talent show The Voice Australia.
Australian entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins, a long-time personal friend of Farnham, hosted the tribute event as the evening's master of ceremonies.
Family Health Update and Statements
Farnham's son Rob Farnham took to the stage during the concert to express gratitude to both the performing artists and the crowd in attendance, stating that his father would be deeply moved by the turnout.
"We all know he's a little bit too humble for his own good sometimes," Rob Farnham said. "Thank you from the Farnham family, and my dad. To see all the people here would warm his heart."
The concert came after Farnham's family issued a statement on social media on Saturday detailing the singer's deteriorating health. His son James Farnham shared the update to explain why his father was not well enough to attend the Melbourne event.
"A statement from our family. John has been deeply moved by everything happening this weekend around the tribute concert at Rod Laver Arena," James Farnham wrote. "The extraordinary work of the producers over these past few months, the generosity of all the artists giving their time, and the dedication of the crew and production teams working so hard to deliver this special concert. None of it is taken for granted by John or any of us, as a family. On John's behalf, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts."
James Farnham then revealed the extent of his father's medical needs following his battle with mouth cancer. "Unfortunately, he will not be able to attend and, as a family, we feel it is important to provide an update on John's health to help explain why," he said.
"John's health has deteriorated in recent months," he continued. "He now requires continuous oxygen support and uses a wheelchair for mobility. It has become necessary to receive 24-hour nursing care at home, ensuring trained support is always available when he needs it."
He explained why the family decided to make the details public after keeping them private while adjusting to his changing needs: "We have kept these matters private while our family has adjusted to John's changing needs. However, we now feel it is important that John's fans and supporters understand his circumstances, why he cannot be there this weekend."
"If things were different, John would have loved nothing more than to attend," James Farnham added. "He would undoubtedly have been a little overwhelmed by all the fuss, but he would also have wanted to thank everyone involved in person. As a family, we have decided that it is best for John to remain at home, where he can be safe and comfortable."
Concluding the statement, he wrote: "Thank you for your understanding and for the many messages of love and support John continues to receive. And to everyone involved in this weekend's celebration concert: chookas!"
Fundraising for Cancer Support
The Melbourne concert served as a benefit in aid of the Lend Your Voice campaign. The initiative aims to raise $1 million for Head and Neck Cancer Australia over the coming year.
All proceeds raised from the concert will go directly toward supporting Head and Neck Cancer Australia, a national non-profit organization dedicated to providing education, advocacy, and support for individuals diagnosed with head and neck cancers.
