Betty Ross, the daughter of broadcaster Jonathan Ross, marked their 35th birthday over the weekend with a run of bold outfits and celebrations. Betty, who identifies as they/them, was pictured holding candles shaped into the number 35 as they marked the milestone.
Their boldest look of the weekend was a neon orange dress with lace-up sides, worn with pink hair, white knee-high socks and gold wedge heels.
Betty's Instagram bio leans into the same directness, describing them as "Your favourite fat disabled nonbinary polyamorous d**e," a nod to their health, gender identity and sexuality.
Picnic, drinks and a slip dress
Betty spent part of the birthday at a picnic with friends, wearing a plunging knitted halterneck dress, before changing into a cream slip dress and a hairband reading "It's My Birthday." One photo showed them holding both a glass of champagne and a cosmopolitan at the same time.
In another post, Betty used the occasion to highlight the wheelchair they use, showing off its bejewelled handles, which come from the brand Distribe.
Living with fibromyalgia
Jonathan Ross, the television and radio presenter known for hosting long-running chat shows, has spoken publicly on several occasions about his daughter's fibromyalgia, a long-term condition that causes pain throughout the body and has left Betty needing to use a wheelchair.
Speaking in 2022, he said doctors did not yet know how to treat the condition because there was no medical consensus on it. He said Betty also had chronic fatigue syndrome and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, known as POTS, which causes a person's heart rate to shoot up.
Ross said depression was often the hardest part for people living with a long-term illness, since it left them stuck indoors and unable to join in with things, adding that even stairs were a challenge for his daughter. He said the illness did have an impact on her, but that the good thing was she was definitely showing improvement.
Betty's 2021 diagnosis
Betty first revealed the diagnosis to followers on Instagram in September 2021, writing that she felt relieved to finally have her pain acknowledged. She wrote: "Shout out to the four people who all said they thought I had fibro, turns out y'all were right. There's always a lot of weird feelings that come with a new diagnosis, but this one overall feels like a relief."
The birthday celebrations also included a large spread of food, among it French fries, Love Hearts sweets and muffins, along with a bunch of flowers Betty was gifted for the occasion.
