Most people hang laundry wherever there is free space on a drying rack, placing trousers next to a shirt, then a towel, socks and another hoodie. But in Japan, a method of hanging washing in an arc shape is popular instead.
How the arc method works
Under this method, the longest items, such as trousers and large towels, go on the outer sections of the drying rack. Items get shorter closer to the centre, where T-shirts, underwear or socks can be hung.
The technique relies on air circulation. Arranging clothes this way creates more space between and beneath each item, allowing moisture to evaporate more easily. It is also important not to hang too many items at once, since even the best method will not help much if wet clothes are touching each other.
Other laundry tips
Shirts and blouses should be hung on hangers rather than draped over a drying rack, the same way they would be stored in a wardrobe. This stops the fabric folding in half and lets air reach a larger surface area.
Another trick involves placing wet clothing on a dry towel, rolling it up and gently pressing it. The towel absorbs some of the remaining water before the item is hung up.
