Jalen Brunson makes Law & Order SVU cameo as detective

New York Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson has made his television acting debut on the NBC crime drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Brunson guest starred on the November 5 episode of the series, appearing opposite lead actress and dedicated Knicks supporter Mariska Hargitay. The cameo adds to a landmark 2026 for the basketball player, who has already won an NBA championship, earned the Finals MVP award, and hosted Saturday Night Live.

Law & Order: SVU, which premiered on NBC in 1999, follows detectives in the New York City Police Department handling complex investigations. Hargitay stars as Captain Olivia Benson, having led the procedural drama across 26 television seasons.

Detective Madison at the diner counter

In the November 5 scene, Benson meets Brunson's character inside a restaurant. Benson greets him by saying, "Detective Madison. Look at you out of uniform, huh? Congratulations on the promotion."

Brunson sits at the restaurant counter wearing everyday clothing with an NYPD shield displayed around his neck. The character's surname serves as an explicit tribute to Madison Square Garden, the iconic Manhattan arena where Brunson and the Knicks play their home games.

"Thanks, Captain," Detective Madison responds. "Focused on my goals, gave it 110 percent. Things worked out." Benson smiles and replies, "Yeah, they did," offering an unmistakable nod to Brunson's central role in delivering the Knicks an NBA title.

The conversation quickly shifts to police business. Detective Madison provides Benson with details regarding a past suspect he encountered, describing the individual as a "real pain in the ass." Benson takes particular notice when Madison mentions finding a metal rod inside the vehicle.

The tip proves crucial to the investigation. The metal rod is subsequently identified as the weapon used in the assault on the episode's victim, supplying Benson and her squad with the critical physical evidence required to secure charges against the suspect.

Courtside friendship with Mariska Hargitay

Fans responded enthusiastically to the brief appearance across social media. On an Instagram post from Law & Order previewing the cameo, one fan wrote, "Short appearance but I loved it," while another viewer commented, "Jalen is so very talented!!!"

The on-screen pairing reflects a genuine relationship between the athlete and the actress. Hargitay has long been a familiar presence sitting courtside at Madison Square Garden to support Brunson and the Knicks roster.

Brunson has previously named Hargitay as the top celebrity supporter in his personal rankings. In a conversation with former NBA player Richard Jefferson, Brunson blushed as he stated, "My number one, love her to death, and she knows it: Mariska Hargitay."

Hargitay has voiced equal admiration for the point guard. The actress stated that she feels "profoundly grateful" for Brunson's leadership on the court and praised how the championship roster has "brought our city together."

Celebrity fans at Madison Square Garden

Hargitay is part of a prominent collection of entertainment figures who regularly attend games in Midtown Manhattan. Actor Timothée Chalamet has frequently shared his allegiance to the basketball team. The Marty Supreme star explained his fandom during a 2025 appearance on 7PM in Brooklyn, saying, "My grandma was a huge Knicks fan, so that's what turned me onto them. If you live in New York, you are a Knicks fan."

Reality star and businesswoman Kylie Jenner, who has been dating Chalamet since 2023, has frequently accompanied the actor courtside to support the team.

Filmmaker and actor Ben Stiller has expressed an even deeper commitment to the franchise. The Severance director revealed that if given a choice between receiving an Academy Award and seeing the Knicks secure a championship, he would select the basketball title. Speaking on the New Heights podcast in 2025, Stiller said, "I really think, at the end of the day, if I knew that I had the choice, I would give it to the Knicks, because I knew at least I had the choice in this weird, non-real situation."

Director Spike Lee has stood as the team's most recognizable courtside fan across multiple decades. Expressing total confidence in the 2025-2026 lineup, Lee told the New York Post in May 2026, "I don’t care about San Antonio. OKC. We’re going to win."

Comedians and musicians in the crowd

Comedian Tracy Morgan has maintained an equally passionate connection to the franchise. Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show in 2021, the 30 Rock star declared, "I'm the biggest Knicks fan there is besides Spike."

Rapper Fat Joe shared his reflections when the team advanced toward the championship round following years of playoff droughts. Speaking to ESPN shortly before the finals appearance was confirmed, the hip-hop artist remarked, "It’s time. We paid our dues."

Other frequent faces in the courtside seats include comedian and former Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson, as well as veteran stand-up comic Chris Rock, both of whom have attended games over many seasons.

Curb Your Enthusiasm creator Larry David regularly watches the team from the front row alongside his television co-star JB Smoove. Marking his loyalty on Instagram in 2024, Smoove wrote, "How it started vs How it ended. It’ll always be Knicks for life."

From Hollywood stars to courtside couples

The team's courtside culture extends into personal relationships as well. Entrepreneur and Woods by Jordyn founder Jordyn Woods attends games to support her fiance, Knicks starting center Karl-Anthony Towns.

Recording artist Cardi B has also made high-profile visits to Madison Square Garden. The rapper and former Patriots player Stefon Diggs publicly confirmed their romance during a 2025 matchup between the Knicks and the Boston Celtics.

Actress Anne Hathaway brought team colors to national television during an April 2026 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, wearing an orange and blue pocket square. Describing her passion for the team, The Devil Wears Prada star told Fallon, "I’m very chill. I’m very loving and calm. But I’m also the type of fan that I considered wearing an OG jersey out here today."

Host Fallon is an active supporter himself, attending playoff games during the 2026 postseason alongside his eldest daughter, Franny.

Longtime followers of the franchise also include Back to the Future star Michael J. Fox, who frequently attends games with his wife, Tracy Pollan. The Daily Show host Jon Stewart has remained a self-described "ride or die" follower throughout decades of franchise history, while singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers has also shared her enthusiasm for the team.
