Honda to start next-gen hybrid push with CR-V in 2027

Honda will launch its fifth-generation hybrid system with the CR-V in 2027 after shifting focus away from several planned electric vehicles.

Honda to start next-gen hybrid push with CR-V in 2027

Honda Motor Co. will launch its fifth-generation hybrid technology on a redesigned CR-V crossover in 2027 following a major strategy shift in North America.

The change follows the Japanese manufacturer's decision to abruptly cancel three completely new vehicles planned for the North American market, including two all-electric models. Honda has now shifted its primary focus toward developing its fifth-generation hybrid drivetrain technology.

Honda shifted its focus to fifth-generation hybrid technology after cancelling three models planned for North America.

According to details reported by Nikkei Asia, initial production of the next-generation CR-V Hybrid will begin at a manufacturing facility in Canada in February 2027. Assembly of the crossover will subsequently move to production facilities in the United States.

The new CR-V Hybrid will serve as the flagship model for Honda's updated strategic direction. The new architecture is designed to replace the hybrid systems currently used across the company's vehicle lineup, including the Civic, Accord, and HR-V, as well as the new Prelude.

Cheaper production and improved fuel efficiency

Honda's fifth-generation hybrid architecture focuses on improving consumer value and boosting overall corporate profitability. The company states that the new infrastructure promises fuel savings of over 10 percent compared with existing hybrid systems, while reducing production costs by 30 percent.

At the heart of the new system is a newly developed 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with two new electric motors. Vehicles utilizing this setup will feature Honda's S+ Shift system as standard equipment, which simulates physical gear changes in a manner similar to the concept Prelude model.

Hybrid electric vehicles combine conventional internal combustion engines with electric motor propulsion systems to reduce overall fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions. The technology allows drivers to achieve higher efficiency without relying entirely on charging infrastructure.

Lighter mid-size platform and chassis updates

The renewed CR-V and subsequent Honda models will incorporate significant structural updates alongside the new powertrain. The vehicles will be built on Honda's next-generation mid-size platform, which the automaker first displayed late last year.

The updated architecture is a full 90 kilograms lighter than equivalent chassis structures found in current Honda models. Honda engineered the lighter, more flexible chassis to deliver substantial improvements in ride quality and passenger comfort.

Honda is a major Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer headquartered in Tokyo. First introduced in the 1990s, the CR-V compact crossover has grown to become one of the brand's most popular and critical high-volume vehicles in North America.

Advanced motion management and sensor technology

To control vehicle movement, the new models will feature an updated Honda Motion Management System. The safety and handling technology relies on a six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit sensor that continuously monitors vehicle body roll and yaw movements in real time.

By analyzing vehicle body motion instantly, the system makes millisecond interventions to individual wheel brakes and the torque distribution of the electric motors. Honda indicates these rapid adjustments will refine handling performance and cornering stability.

Following the initial launch of the CR-V Hybrid in 2027, Honda plans to deploy its fifth-generation hybrid technology across its broader vehicle portfolio in North America.
