Holland Taylor reveals why she left Two and a Half Men

Holland Taylor has revealed that she quit her regular starring role on Two and a Half Men after producers refused to increase her salary.

The 83-year-old actress played Evelyn Harper, the wealthy mother of lead characters Charlie and Alan Harper, who were portrayed by Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer.

Speaking on the Alchemy with Anthony Mason podcast, Taylor explained that she felt undervalued by the production team because she was never properly compensated for her work on the hit American sitcom.

Taylor stated that the money she received on the comedy matched what she had earned on a television series roughly eight years earlier. Despite earning four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for her performance as the Harper brothers' mother, she said executives never offered her a pay rise.

Contract negotiations and departure

Taylor explained that the situation reached a turning point when her original six-year contract came to an end. Feeling unappreciated by studio bosses, she decided to walk away from her full-time agreement and proposed transitioning into a recurring guest star instead.

Recalling the discussions, Taylor said she informed producers that she no longer wished to remain under contract once the six years finished, but offered to visit the show occasionally if they wanted her to appear. She pointed out to them that she played the mother of the central characters.

According to Taylor, studio bosses responded by telling her that they could not pay her anything more. She told them they could afford to pay her the cost of the entire building, but said they should not bother because she had no interest in continuing under contract, confirming she would simply return as a guest from time to time.

Taylor added that while producers were surprised by her choice to walk away, they made no effort to keep her on the permanent cast. She said executives were merely trying to protect themselves against giving her a significant pay increase.

Salary disparity between co-stars

The veteran actress noted that the network treated her co-star Jon Cryer very differently during contract renewals. She said that Cryer quadrupled his salary or achieved a similar increase, explaining that studios routinely offered such substantial pay rises when an actor reached the end of their existing deal.

Cryer starred as Alan Harper alongside Charlie Sheen's Charlie Harper in the hit CBS sitcom, which became one of the most-watched comedy series on American television.

Two and a Half Men made its television debut in the United States on September 22, 2003, and went on to run for a total of 12 seasons before broadcasting its final episode on February 19, 2015.

Although Taylor stepped down from the regular cast after the sixth season concluded, she did not walk away from the show completely. She kept her promise to producers and continued making recurring guest appearances as Evelyn Harper right through to the final twelfth season.

Career on stage and screen

Taylor is widely recognized as one of the most prominent character actresses in American television and cinema, with a professional acting career spanning more than five decades. Prior to joining Two and a Half Men, she earned critical acclaim and won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1999 for her portrayal of Judge Roberta Kittleson on the legal drama The Practice.

Her notable film credits include roles in major features such as The Truman Show and Legally Blonde. Over the course of her time on Two and a Half Men, her four Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series helped establish Evelyn Harper as one of the show's defining figures.
