Hellenic Navy Band plays Mazonakis hits in Thessaloniki

The Hellenic Navy Band surprised crowds in Thessaloniki by performing hit songs by Greek pop star Giorgos Mazonakis during the city's annual civic celebrations.

A tenor from the naval ensemble took the microphone in Aristotelous Square to deliver a rendition of Mazonakis's hit Aniko Se Mena, followed by the song Ores Mikres.

The musical display took place in the heart of the city as part of public presentations organized for the double holiday of Thessaloniki, drawing the attention of both local residents and visiting tourists.

The choice of popular Greek music set a different tone for the military unit's presence at the festivities, stepping away from standard parade drills to engage the gathering public.

Popular repertoire in Aristotelous Square

The naval ensemble frequently includes well-known Greek and foreign songs in its public programs rather than restricting itself to traditional military marches. In Thessaloniki, the performance combined the formal musical heritage of the naval branch with modern popular music.

The venue for the performance, Aristotelous Square, is the main public gathering space in central Thessaloniki. Positioned on the waterfront facing the Thermaic Gulf, the square regularly serves as the focal point for open air concerts, public rallies, and official state commemorations.

Civic celebrations across the city

The performance took place during the city's traditional double holiday celebrations. The annual civic occasion marks both the religious feast day of Saint Demetrios, the patron saint of Thessaloniki, and the anniversary of the city's liberation in October 1912 during the First Balkan War.

Mazonakis, whose hits were showcased by the navy tenor, is one of Greece's most enduring commercial recording artists. Rising to prominence in the 1990s, he has built an extensive catalog of mainstream laiko and dance tracks that remain staples of Greek popular culture.

The public presentations in the city centre formed part of a wider schedule of festive events held across northern Greece's largest metropolis to mark the historic milestone.
