Mexican fisherman Hector Marquez Martinez has survived eight days drifting in open sea on a motorboat off the coast of Mexico after going missing.
He was safely recovered after a passing vessel spotted his drifting boat in the middle of the ocean, according to a report by news outlet La Nacion.
Marquez Martinez departed for a routine fishing trip on August 31. The voyage was intended to take only a few hours, but he failed to return home.
Following his disappearance, his father suspected that the fisherman had either lost his way along the route or experienced a mechanical failure with his boat engine.
Search and discovery at sea
Local fishermen initiated search operations in the coastal waters shortly after Marquez Martinez failed to return from his trip. Volunteers and professional rescue personnel subsequently joined the search efforts to locate the missing motorboat.
The search yielded a major breakthrough on September 6 when crew members aboard a cargo ship spotted Marquez Martinez drifting in his boat. Although he had survived the six days at sea up to that point, he refused to abandon his motorboat.
A second ship travelled to the area the following day to provide assistance. The crew of the second vessel successfully rescued Marquez Martinez and brought him aboard.

Following his rescue, Marquez Martinez was evaluated by medical personnel. Despite suffering from dehydration after spending eight days stranded in the open ocean, doctors assessed his overall condition as stable.
