Heathrow Airport has warned of operational disruption after flooding caused by a burst pipe restricted access to Terminals 2 and 3. The Guardian reported that water in the central terminal area has prevented motor vehicles from reaching or leaving either of the affected terminals.
Passengers traveling to or from Terminals 2 and 3 have been advised to use rail and underground services instead of road transport. Access to terminal car parks has also been severely impacted, leaving passengers who parked their vehicles there unable to reach them.
Heathrow Airport, located in West London, is the largest airport in the United Kingdom and serves as one of the busiest international travel hubs in the world. An airport spokesperson stated that emergency crews were working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. The spokesperson apologized for any inconvenience and confirmed that the leak had been isolated, with repair work currently under way.
Airport Disruption During Peak Summer Travel
The flooding comes during the school summer holidays, which is one of the busiest periods of the year for the facility. Airport officials previously disclosed that July 19 marked Heathrow's busiest day of the year so far, with more than 267,000 passengers passing through the airport.
Rory Boland, the editor of consumer publication Which? Travel, advised passengers who fear missing their flights to contact their airline as soon as possible. Boland noted that airlines maintain varying policies regarding missed flights, making it essential for passengers to determine if they qualify for a free rebooking or a refund if their flight departs without them.
Passenger Advice for Missed Flights and Parking
Boland also urged travelers who paid for airport parking but cannot access the lots due to road closures to contact the parking operator promptly to inquire about changing their booking or obtaining a refund. In addition, he recommended that passengers review their travel insurance policies to check whether additional travel costs or missed flight expenses are covered.
