Loneliness can be reflected in your blood.
Japanese scientists analyzed blood samples from 83 people and found specific links in people experiencing “extreme social withdrawal.”
Levels of long-chain acylcarnitine, a fat linked to heart problems, were high. Lonely men also had lower bilirubin and arginine levels, which are linked to depression.
Publishing their work in the journal Dialogues In Clinical Neuroscience, the researchers say this is “the first step in uncovering the biological roots of the condition.”

Since Lecter is a psychopath…
The brains of psychopaths are structurally different from those without psychopathic traits.
The scientists looked at 120 people using MRI scanners and found that an area of the brain called the striatum was on average ten percent larger in adults with psychopathic tendencies.

Psychopathic traits – as seen in Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter in Red Dragon (above) – include a lack of remorse or empathy
The striatum helps process feelings of motivation and reward.

“There may be differences in biology, in this case, in the size of their brain structures, between antisocial and non-antisocial individuals,” said Olivia Choy of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
Prolonged exposure to air pollution increases the risk of kidney problems.
US researchers compared the health data of 60 million people with regional pollution data over a 16-year period. Those living in areas with above-average pollution were 2% more likely to be hospitalized with chronic kidney disease.
They were also one percent more likely to be hospitalized with total kidney and urinary tract disease.
The study looked at levels of tiny pollutants called nitrogen dioxide and PM2.5 particles, both of which are produced by cars. As many as 36,000 Britons die each year from air pollution.
Experts believe that the kidneys are vulnerable because toxins are concentrated as they filter the blood.
Most men exaggerate how healthy they are. In a survey of 893 American men surveyed about their health habits, nearly two-thirds said they were healthier than average.
Dr. Thomas Kelley of the Orlando Health Clinic, who commissioned the study, advised men to have more frequent checkups.
“Even if you think you’re healthy and don’t show any symptoms, life-threatening problems can occur that often go unnoticed and left unchecked,” he said.
