He said a hot shower triggers the production of melatonin, a hormone that tells the body it’s time to sleep.

In the hours before bedtime, the body naturally cools down, which promotes sleep. A hot shower and subsequent drying mimics this process.

“As you dry off, your body cools down to the right temperature,” said Dr. Singh. “These two things combine to provide better sleep.”

A 2019 meta-analysis of 17 studies found that an evening shower at 104 to 108.5 degrees Fahrenheit led to better sleep quality.

These conditions strip the skin of its natural moisture. Showering can help replenish moisture, and this effect lasts longer at night as skin cells then repair themselves.

“If you tend to have dry or sensitive skin, showering at night is a better way to moisturize your skin,” said dr. Singh.

However, a morning shower still has benefits. Even at night, bacteria and other germs accumulate on the skin as it sweats and releases skin cells. Showering in the morning can still eliminate some of these pollutants, Dr. Singh.

“We know that your body can accumulate certain germs like bacteria and fungi through processes like shedding and shedding skin cells,” he said.

“As a byproduct, an odor is created, and so morning showers cleanse the bacteria and skin secretions that have built up, bringing the skin microbiome to a more hygienic baseline.”
