A baby in Brazil was born with a tail, surgeons have revealed in an intriguing new report.
Doctors removed the girl’s 6cm appendage, which was covered in skin and protruded from her back.
Incredible before and after photos published in a medical journal show her three years after undergoing life-changing surgery.
Fewer than 200 cases of this phenomenon – an abnormality during pregnancy – have ever been reported in the literature.
The story of the unidentified girl was published in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery Case Reports.

The girl was born with spina bifida, a rare spinal defect that occurs in the womb and causes a gap in the spine.
According to doctors who treated the girl, this is probably why she has a dick.
The operation also closed the hole and removed the appendix.
Doctors at GRENDAAC, a children’s hospital in Sao Paolo, said the tail stemmed from the lumbosacral region – the area that connects the spine to the pelvis.

Doctors diagnosed the appendage as a “human pseudo-tail”.
Pseudotails are growths that look like a tail but are caused by spinal problems or tumors.
They differ from real roosters, which contain muscles, blood vessels and nerves, but no bones.
Researchers from the Center for Fetal and Placental Research in Ohio studied the case with Brazilian doctors.
They wrote: “Human caudal appendages are rare lesions that place an enormous stigma on their bearers and parents.
Fetal caudal appendages are associated with spinal dysraphism (spina bifida) and their presence therefore requires careful screening for underlying spinal cord defects.
“Identifying the many potential associated abnormalities is critical to planning the right treatment and providing quality guidance.”
They added that surgery is important to avoid stigma and complications such as pain, torsion, continued growth, irritation or collapse.
Human tails are believed to originate from the embryonic tail that all babies develop in the womb.

According to a report published in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery Case Reports, physical examination revealed a 6 cm skin-covered soft tissue tail growing from the lumbosacral region.
In almost all babies, it is absorbed back into the body to form the coccyx.
However, it is thought to develop into a tail on extremely rare occasions.
They are generally not noticed until after a baby is born, and doctors do not know what causes them – with only one case where they run in families.
Human ancestors, in addition to our ape family, lost our tails when we split from apes about 20 million years ago.
Human roosters are considered sacred and revered in some religions and cultures.

Human roosters fall into two categories.
Pseudotails are growths that look like a tail but are caused by spinal problems or tumors.
“Real roosters,” on the other hand, contain muscles, blood vessels, and nerves, but no bones.
