American actress Hayden Panettiere has died at the age of 36 after being found unresponsive in an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday, August 17, 2026.
Police officers and emergency responders arrived at the Judson Mill Lofts apartment complex around 1:50 p.m. local time following a 911 call from an unidentified acquaintance of the actress. Panettiere was staying at the residence, which was reported to be an Airbnb, after flying to South Carolina from Los Angeles on Saturday with her ex-boyfriend, Brian Hickerson.
According to the 911 call recording, the acquaintance told dispatchers that Panettiere was unresponsive and in cardiac arrest following a suspected overdose. Paramedics performed chest compressions in an effort to resuscitate her, but she was pronounced dead just over 40 minutes after the initial emergency call was placed.
TMZ reported that Narcan, a nasal spray used to counter the effects of an opioid overdose, was found on a mattress inside the apartment, though officials have not confirmed whether it was administered. The Greenville County Coroner's Office completed an autopsy on Monday and stated that no signs of physical trauma contributing to her death were discovered, adding that preliminary investigations indicate no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
Panettiere's father, Alan Lee "Skip" Panettiere, confirmed her death in a public statement. "It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden," he said. "She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her, and to the millions who watched her onscreen." He asked for privacy while the family processes the loss.
Recent Projects and Last Public Appearances
The death of the actress, who would have turned 37 on Friday, came just three months after she appeared on wellness guru Jay Shetty's podcast, On Purpose, to promote her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. During the two-hour interview, Panettiere spoke tearfully about overcoming personal trauma, including losing custody of her daughter, the death of her brother, and a permanent estrangement from her mother.
Despite her past struggles, Panettiere expressed optimism about her future during the podcast appearance. "I finally feel like I have shaken off all this darkness and this negativity and that means that I've closed one door and another door is open and I can feel it open and I can feel all the exciting possibilities," she told Shetty. "I feel like I have a lot more life to live."
Her memoir reached number four on the New York Times bestseller list following its release in May, and she travelled across the United States to promote the book. Music video director Chris Applebaum, who directed Panettiere in her Wake Up Call music video, saw her a few months ago at a party at Paris Hilton's home in Los Angeles. Applebaum said her pain appeared debilitating and that she required assistance to move through the large house. He noted that she was not drinking alcohol at the party and wanted to power through her pain to avoid feeling locked in her home.
TMZ reported that Panettiere had complained of back pain over the past year, and a source close to the family noted she had nerve issues causing leg trauma.
