A spokesman for the Greenville County Coroner's Office confirmed the cause of death to The Daily Mail one month after the former child star passed away on August 16. An autopsy conducted by a Board Certified Forensic Pathologist discovered no signs of physical trauma that would have contributed to her death.
The coroner's office officially ruled the manner of death as an accident and closed the case administratively. Spokespersons confirmed the specific substances found during toxicology testing, stating: "An autopsy was completed by a Board Certified Forensic Pathologist. At autopsy no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death. The cause of death has been ruled as toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, Methocarbamol, and Quetiapine. The manner of death has been ruled accident. This case is administratively closed by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office."
Medical details of substances identified
Toxicology results identified five separate chemical compounds in her system at the time of her passing. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid where just a few grains can cause a fatal overdose, operating at up to 50 times the potency of heroin. The testing also detected 4-ANPP, a chemical compound recognized as a main building block used to produce illegal fentanyl.
The toxicology report further detailed three prescription medications. Alprazolam, widely known by the brand name Xanax, is utilized to treat anxiety and panic disorders. Methocarbamol is a prescription muscle relaxant prescribed for short-term muscle pain. Quetiapine, commonly known by the brand name Seroquel, is an antipsychotic prescription medication used to manage conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder.
Insiders told TMZ last week that law enforcement authorities believed Panettiere had fatally consumed a single oxycodone pill laced with fentanyl. Sources told the outlet that Panettiere maintained a long-time drug dealer in Los Angeles from whom she obtained illegal narcotics, including oxycodone. Authorities noted that on the day prior to her death, Panettiere had taken multiple drugs purchased in Los Angeles before flying to South Carolina, where she was discovered dead the following day.
Emergency response at Greenville location
First responders arrived at a Greenville, South Carolina, condo after receiving an emergency report of an unresponsive female from a suspected drug overdose, who was subsequently identified as Panettiere. Emergency personnel made attempts to resuscitate the actress before she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Panettiere's on-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother, Zach Hickerson, were both present at the scene when she was pronounced dead.
Following the tragedy, Hickerson's attorney Sloan Ellis issued a statement on August 20 regarding the police investigation: "Hayden's death remains under investigation and it is important to allow that investigation to proceed. As has been publicly reported, police confirmed there were no signs of foul play. Out of respect for Hayden's loved ones and the ongoing investigation, there will be no further comment at this time."
