Harry Styles channelled his inner Mr Darcy as he walked through New York to a soundcheck for his massive residency at Madison Square Garden, while his fiancée Zoe Kravitz explored the city in a separate outing.

The British singer, 32, wore a billowing white shirt reminiscent of the classic Jane Austen character as he made his way from Brooklyn to the famous Manhattan arena.

His romantic, loose-fitting top drew immediate comparisons to the unforgettable outfit worn by Colin Firth as Mr Darcy in the beloved 1995 BBC television adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

He completed the casual yet striking look with sunglasses and a grey cap embroidered with the phrase "techno is my boyfriend".

The chart-topping star has been seen wearing the cap previously, a nod to his embrace of the dance music genre on his hit album, Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally.

New York wedding plans

On the same day, his fiancée Kravitz, 37, was seen across town after arriving in the city with the musician.

According to the US gossip column Page Six, the pair are currently considering a small wedding in front of just family and close friends in the UK around Christmas time.

However, a source told the publication that Kravitz, the daughter of the rock musician Lenny Kravitz, might also want a celebration in New York.

"I know for a fact Zoe would want to do something in New York because of her dad Lenny, so if anything it is going to be two weddings," the source said.

"Dad still lives in downtown Manhattan. It could be at the Fouquet's Hotel. If she does two weddings it would be one in London and one in New York."

Washing off the persona

A different source previously told the British tabloid The Sun that Kravitz is already thinking about the wedding and wants something unique, having started discussing ideas for outfits, themes and designs.

"She is torn between a very intimate ceremony, possibly even eloping, and a larger celebration with all their loved ones, though a bigger wedding may ultimately win out," the source claimed.

"She talks about it all the time, beautiful locations like Paris or the French Riviera, lots of flowers, stunning outfits, and a celebration that lasts all day and night, surrounded by love."

Their separate outings in New York come as a sizzling new cover shoot of Styles for the fashion publication W magazine was released.

The glamorous photographs feature the singer showing off his ripped muscles and quirky fashion sense.

In an accompanying interview, Styles talked about reconciling the juxtaposition of his famous public persona and his real life self.

He revealed how he washes off his onstage character after every show to be left naked and in a vulnerable state.

Godlike position

Styles told W that he has learned not to take public feedback to heart, whether it is positive or negative.

"One of the best things anyone has told me is that comments, the bad and good, neither of them are true," he said.

"Some people will tell you you are the best thing in the world, and that is not true. Some people will tell you you are terrible, and that is also not true."

He added that performing live creates a powerful and unifying dynamic with the audience.

"We, as the crew and the band, get to create an environment for people to have this joyous time," he said. "But we are all there for the same thing. If you are onstage, it is a very godlike position."

"But I am not guiding you to me. I am not asking you to follow me. I am saying that I believe in the same thing that you believe in, and we are all here for that reason, which is beyond me."

A vulnerable state

The musician spoke about shaking off the perception others have of him onstage by showering immediately after each performance.

"When I come offstage, the first thing I do is shower, because it is better for me to feel like I washed it off," he said.

"There is a version where you come offstage and feel like, 'Oh, I am the guy right now.' I remember that from the really early days, the 'How do I stay in this feeling, this is amazing!'"

"Over the years, I have tried to acknowledge that is that and I can wash it off," Styles continued. "You do the show, you go backstage, you shower, and all of a sudden you are naked in this most vulnerable, almost infant-like state of yourself."

"It could not be more different from what you were doing ten minutes ago."

Appreciating home

Styles admitted that because he started touring from such a young age with One Direction, he used to feel uncomfortable with stretches of time spent at home and would not know what to do with himself sometimes.

But these days, he said he relishes the time and also has a deep appreciation for touring, knowing that it is not forever.

"It is such an unnatural thing to be shown other people's perception of you all the time," he said.

"I was a little bit in my head about moving through the world and feeling very aware of how everything was being perceived toward the end of the last tour."

When the interviewer probed by suggesting what happens once he reads a comment, Styles replied simply: "It is death!"
