Gotham Awards reveals nominees to open film awards season

The Gotham Awards reveals its official nominees on Tuesday, October 27, kicking off the annual cinematic awards season. Considered one of the first major ceremonies on the film calendar, the presentation honors independent films and filmmakers ahead of the winter circuit.

The ceremony will take place on November 30 of this year, when the statuettes will be handed out to the winners. According to the organizers on the event social media channels, the announcement is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Brasilia time through a live broadcast.

Several titles have emerged as potential contenders ahead of the official reveal. Films including A Bola Preta, O Convite, and A Grande Estreia have circulated widely among the anticipated nominations across the independent film categories.

Special tributes and career honors

Organizers have already confirmed several honorary awards for the upcoming 36th ceremony. Animation company Laika Studios will receive the Gotham Anniversary Tribute in honor of its 20 years of innovative storytelling and the release of Wildwood. The studio, based in Oregon, is known across the film industry for its stop motion animation features, including Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings.

British filmmaker Danny Boyle will collect the Gotham Director Tribute. The award celebrates a career spanning four decades, which includes directing landmarks such as Trainspotting and the Oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire, alongside his latest achievement in Ink.

The Gotham Vanguard Tribute will go to A Bola Preta, directed by Spanish filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi. The trophy recognizes pioneering films that push the boundaries of cinema through fearless artistic choices.

In addition, the cast and filmmakers behind Michael will receive the Gotham Musical Tribute. The special recognition follows the commercial success of the production, which grossed more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

Role in the film awards calendar

Founded in 1991 in New York by the organization now known as The Gotham Film and Media Institute, the Gotham Awards traditionally serve as the curtain raiser for the annual Hollywood awards season. The ceremony focuses on independent productions and emerging cinema, often providing early momentum for films seeking attention during the broader awards circuit.

The event contrasts with mainstream studio galas by highlighting distinctive artistic voices and lower budget independent cinema. Critical recognition at the ceremony often helps smaller titles gain visibility before major industry guild presentations and the Academy Awards in the new year.

Previous winners and international contenders

At the previous edition held in December 2025, director Paul Thomas Anderson emerged as the night's biggest winner when his film Uma Batalha Apos a Outra secured the ceremony's top prize. Anderson is widely recognized for acclaimed American films including There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights, and Magnolia.

The most trophies at the 2025 ceremony went to Foi Apenas um Acidente, directed by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. The film secured three awards, winning Best Director, Original Screenplay, and International Feature. Panahi, an internationally celebrated auteur, has long been recognized for his work at major European film festivals including Cannes, Venice, and Berlin.

Brazilian cinema was also represented at the previous ceremony by the feature O Agente Secreto. The Brazilian production competed in two categories, earning nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Actor, but left the night without a victory in either race.
